Exterior Painting
Exterior paint in our climate has to survive humid summers, hard freezes and a lot of sun on south and west walls. The prep and the timing matter as much as the paint: washing, scraping, priming bare wood, caulking the right joints, and painting when temperatures and dew point allow.

Questions about exterior painting
When is exterior painting season here?
Usually late spring through early fall. The real limits are the minimum temperature on the paint label, keeping surfaces above the dew point while the paint sets, and a dry forecast.
Can you paint over peeling paint?
Not directly. Loose paint has to be scraped and sanded, and bare wood primed, or the new coat peels with the old one.
My house was built before 1978. Is that a problem?
It just means the old paint may contain lead, so the prep has to follow lead-safe practices. In Wisconsin, paid work that disturbs paint in pre-1978 homes falls under the state's Lead-Safe Renovation rules.
