Painting & flooring in Amery, WI

Local notes for Amery homes

Amery and the surrounding Polk County countryside include in-town homes, lake and river properties and farms. Lake and river homes deal with humidity and shade outside and seasonal use inside; cabins and lake homes that sit unheated or lightly heated in winter put extra stress on flooring, so check the product's temperature limits.

Quick tips

• Seasonal homes: confirm the flooring's temperature range before installing in a space that isn't heated all winter.
• Lake and river exteriors: wash and treat mildew, and paint when surfaces are dry and above the dew point.
• Older homes in town: lead-safe practices for pre-1978 paint.

Wisconsin rules worth knowing

• Lead-safe renovation: Wisconsin runs its own Lead-Safe Renovation program through the Department of Health Services (DHS). Paid renovation, repair or painting that disturbs paint in homes built before 1978 (and in child-occupied facilities) must be done by DHS-certified lead-safe companies and renovators. See our lead-safe guide.
• Building permits: painting and flooring usually don't need permits, but related work (structural repairs, electrical, plumbing) can. Your municipality decides, so ask when in doubt.
• Hiring anyone: ask for a written estimate, proof of insurance and, for pre-1978 homes, lead-safe certification.

Weather and timing

Exterior painting here has a practical season of roughly late spring through early fall. Watch three things, not just the calendar: the minimum temperature on the paint label, the dew point (surfaces should stay comfortably above it while paint sets), and rain in the forecast. Inside, winter air gets very dry and summer air humid, which is why flooring makers specify acclimation and expansion gaps. See humidity, seasons and your floors.
